The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
