The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
