A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
