The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
